how the Guardian Program works

Why We Use a Guardian Program

At Maya’s Puppies, our dogs are truly family. We love them deeply and want the very best for each one. But running a high-quality, ethical breeding program requires:

  • Dogs from diverse, unrelated bloodlines (to prevent inbreeding)
  • Younger dogs to eventually replace our retiring parents
  • Dogs with a variety of coat types, colours, and temperaments to responsibly meet demand and breed for desired traits. However, housing many dogs in one location can pose challenges, from zoning and noise concerns to the real risk of dogs not receiving the individual care, attention, love and stimulation they truly need and deserve.

That’s why I have decided to create and use a Guardian Program.

How It Works

Every breeding dog in our program lives full-time with a carefully chosen, loving guardian family in our local area. These dogs grow up as cherished family pets, going on adventures, sleeping on couches, and receiving all the love they deserve.

When a dog is ready for breeding, they come back to me for a short time to raise their litter. Once their breeding career is complete, they are desexed and remain with their guardian family for the rest of their life.

Why It Matters

This approach means our dogs:

  • Live full, happy lives as beloved pets, not kennel dogs
  • Receive daily exercise, affection, and socialisation
  • Are emotionally well-balanced and make wonderful parents
  • Retire into the same stable, loving home they’ve always known
  • At Maya’s Puppies, we believe ethical breeding starts with putting the dogs first. Our Guardian Program helps us do exactly that.
